Bottega Veneta held its WINTER 2024 runway show, designed by Matthieu Blazy, at 4:00 AM on February 25th (Japan time).

Negative space is at play this season. Inspired by Bottega Veneta's roots before Intrecciato became an icon, ornamentation is kept to a minimum, with a deliberate plainness.

Visual simplicity is pursued while retaining the luxury of touch and feel, especially those brought about through the production process. Decoration is essential, woven into the fabrics featured in the collection. Memory prints layer the passage of time, reflecting the path taken.

Like notebook pages, weaves are a hopeful idea for writing the future. Elements from different eras and seasons are combined and concentrated to shape us in the present and in the future. The silhouettes are rounded, enveloping, protective and utilitarian.

Materials also respond to this process: heated and shaped, boiled and cut, and treated in various ways, wool bouclé, cashmere, and fil coupé are transformed into something practical and resilient, humble yet fiery.

When materials and silhouettes are at once authentic, clothes can no longer pretend to be anything else. There's simplicity in a jersey suit, practicality in a power-shoulder knit, honesty in a cotton-calico shirt, and comfort and protection in supple leather.

The accessories exude heritage and essentiality. Grandmother's crocodile, mother's clutch, father's oxfords. All hail from a time before disposability, and speak to a relationship that transcends fashion, to more meaningful objects that have stood the test of time. The new Liberta bags, as well as the plain Andiamo, Hop and Cava, reflect these elements and blend effortlessly into everyday life.

Carbon black, burnt orange, burgundy, fondant, dark tan, drab olive, ash grey, red, white. A palette evoking the night, along with colours evoking fire, dominates. Occasionally, shades of sky blue and pale sun shine through like rays of day, like light and hope in this new, melancholic world.

Snakes, flames, and flowers are recurring leitmotifs, symbolizing resurrection and renewal. Abstract floral prints adorn skirts adorned with flowing handkerchiefs and simple shirts. The looks then transform into flowers themselves, appearing as bouncy floral dresses crafted from laser-cut micro plisé fabric or as ballenblooms blooming in the desert and other inhospitable landscapes. The lithe fil coupé look abstracts its movement, while flame-printed leather reflects the paradox of flame's shape-shifting movements. The snake appears both as a motif and a material throughout the collection, from bags to reinterpreted belts to spiral-shaped enamel earrings.
