Many Disney heroines wear beautiful dresses and become the object of every girl's imagination. However, Casey, the heroine of the mystery adventure "Tomorrowland" (currently in theaters), starring George Clooney, runs through wheat fields and occasionally climbs over fences. She's not exactly a modest high school girl, but rather a very active one. After receiving an unfamiliar pin, she learns of Tomorrowland and embarks on a grand adventure. Britt Robertson, who plays Casey and has been cited as a noteworthy actress by Vogue magazine, and Mirai Shida, who voices her, both commented that "Casey is a very strong woman." "When I read the script, I felt that Casey is a fighter. She fights for what she believes in, but she's also a dreamer. And she's intelligent. I was conscious of playing a girl who's a little ahead of everyone else."
Shida, who breathed life into the character of Casey in Japanese over four days, said, "I think it's because of Britt's performance that Casey has become such a straightforward, strong, curious, and charming woman. I met her at the world premiere in Los Angeles, so this is my second time, and she is so friendly and kind."
The two have already had a long conversation, and Britt happily revealed that Shida taught her the Japanese word "Saikō!" ("Awesome!") in Japanese, while Shida taught her the English word "Awesome!" (a colloquial expression with a similar nuance to "Saikō").
And Tomorrowland is undoubtedly a "great" movie. Everything is captivating, from the 1964 New York World's Fair venue to modern-day scenery and the ideal world of Tomorrowland. Shida couldn't hide her surprise at the wheat field scene that appears at the beginning, saying, "Did they really create that scenery? I thought it was CGI..." Today, technology has advanced to the point where there's almost nothing that can't be depicted with CGI, but director Brad Bird, who prefers physical locations over virtual ones, built several huge sets for the film.
"Those wheat fields are real (laughs). It's a very memorable scene for me as it was the first thing we shot after filming began. I was amazed when I first saw that scenery. It's amazing that they got the farmer who owned the land to grow wheat for the film. Just like in the film, it was a truly beautiful wheat field that stretched on and on, and it was easy to act in because it was real. I have to be grateful to the director for saying, 'Let's make a wheat field!'"
Casey's costumes in the film, including the wheat field scene, are very casual and boyish. While her look is completely different from the dress she wore at the world premiere and Japan premiere, Britt seems to be similar to Casey when she says, "I like to dress pretty casually, like in T-shirts and jeans (laughs)." Furthermore, Shida confessed that being petite at 150cm tall, size is a major concern for her. She replied, "I understand that! But those pink shoes you wore at the Japan premiere were amazing, and your earrings today are lovely too!" "Thank you! Your hot pink one-shoulder dress looked great on you!" "Thank you! I don't think I have much fashion sense, so I always leave it to my stylists. The clothes they choose for me are always amazing, and they're so beautiful I can't help but get excited." No matter what, girls always get excited talking about fashion. Another topic that got everyone excited was the megastar George Clooney. "It was so much fun!" she said, recalling their time together and sharing an anecdote. "George really loves jokes and pranks, so you never know if he's being serious or joking (laughs). Filming has long wait times, right? When he gets bored, he wants to do something funny. For example, he has an app on his smartphone that plays fart sounds, and he uses it to fart wherever he can (laughs)." Shida also experienced George Clooney's charm and kindness while attending the two premieres. "He was a very friendly and wonderful person. I was actually very nervous at the Japan premiere...George Clooney sensed that and asked me, 'Are you nervous?' He shook my hand and said, 'It's okay, it's okay,'" she recalls. Britt also says that the message the young actresses, who describe Casey as a "strong woman," received from the film was, "Never give up, believe, and take action." "My life doesn't belong to anyone else, so I believe you should live the life you want. If you want to achieve your dreams, you have to take action to make them a reality, just like Casey. She taught me the importance of taking action."
