MILK's Hitomi Okawa: "Harajuku changes every day, but the core remains the same. As long as young people gather here." [MILK 2/2]

Jun 28, 2015

We asked Hitomi Okawa (director of MILK and MILKBOY) five questions after her show in Harajuku: "About the show," "About the town of Harajuku," and "What's next."

--This was your first runway show in six years. Please share your thoughts after the show in front of the invited guests.

I think it was perfect!

--There were many lively productions, such as throwing popcorn from the runway and models taking photos of the audience with their smartphones. Even the same models' facial expressions and gait were carefully designed for each scene. How did you create all the looks?

This show was composed of five themes, each of which represented the MILK/MILKBOY lifestyle. When deciding on the cast, we instantly sensed the personalities and individuality of each model and matched them to their characters.
--Okawa-san, who has been running MILK in the Harajuku district for 45 years, what do you think are the "unchanging" parts of Harajuku and the "parts that feel changed"?
Harajuku changes every day, but its core remains the same. As long as young people gather there.
--Tomizawa-san, who was in charge of hair and makeup for this show, said backstage, "Hitomi has connected all of the members here. She always embraces us with the same kindness and generosity." Through our interviews, we often hear stories of Okawa-san creating opportunities and spaces for people to meet. What is his motivation for creating these places and opportunities for people to meet?
I just realized that wonderful people who share my heart were all around me. I don't think about it in any particular way.

--Please tell us what you are interested in right now and what you would like to challenge yourself with in the future.

I want to deliver the exciting clothes and worldview of MILK/MILKBOY to all our customers. This is what I am interested in, and what I would like to continue challenging myself with in the future.
