"Sugomori Theater" is a service that provides free streaming of archived footage from the New National Theatre, Tokyo. Starting at 3:00 PM on June 5th, we will be re-streaming the opera "The Magic Flute," which was the first production of "Sugomori Theater," in response to requests from our fans.

Mozart's opera The Magic Flute is a veritable "treasure box of sound," with one beautiful song after another. The fantasy of love and adventure, in which a prince rescues a princess and they are united, is woven with familiar melodies, and it is a beloved opera debut for many children around the world. Art world master William Kentridge's version of The Magic Flute, directed with extensive use of video, has earned the stamp of approval from New National Theatre Opera Artistic Director Ono Kazushi, who describes it as "full of fascinating visual art and one of the most philosophical in the world." This is a gem of a production that we would like to see for those who do not usually see opera, especially those in their teens and twenties who are interested in art and music.
Following "The Magic Flute," "Madame Butterfly" and "Werther" will be streamed, and "Stay-at-Home Theater" will conclude on Friday, June 26th. We look forward to the day when we can welcome everyone back to the theater.

The appeal of Kentridge's version of "The Magic Flute"

 ![From]()
William Kentridge is a South African artist active in the production of animated films, plays, and operas using drawings. Renowned worldwide for his "moving drawings," which are animated films made by gradually redrawing charcoal drawings and filming them stop-motion, as well as for the social perspective and powerful intellect that permeate his work, he received the Kyoto Prize in 2010 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2019. Kentridge's production of The Magic Flute uses projections of his drawings to contrast the shadows and light of humanity, offering insights into "goodness" and "power," while shedding light on the Enlightenment ideals inherent in The Magic Flute through the lens of colonialism. Deciphering the various symbols scattered throughout the film is fascinating, and even those who have seen The Magic Flute dozens of times will find it fascinating.
Artistic Director Kazushi Ono chose this production as his first in his new role, saying, "I want to introduce to the Japanese people the fascinating world of opera as a visual art, and the world's most philosophical opera, The Magic Flute," and it has been met with rave reviews, stating, "A new beginning for the New National Theatre." The production was led by conductor Roland Beer, who has been entrusted with important Mozart performances around the world, and the cast included fresh singers from Japan and abroad who are currently performing as a new generation of Mozart singers in opera houses around the world, and the production was met with great acclaim.

◎About the New National Theatre "Stay-at-Home Theater"
In response to requests from the government and the state of emergency declaration regarding COVID-19 countermeasures, the New National Theatre has currently canceled all sponsored performances, with the final performance on February 26th. In this situation where we cannot welcome audiences into the theater, we want to be always together with all of our supporters. Therefore, we launched an online service called "Stay-at-Home Theater" on April 10th, and have so far streamed a total of eight opera and ballet performances on a weekly basis.
Many of the streamed productions have been extremely well-received, with over 30,000 views, demonstrating how many people want to enjoy performing arts during this "stay-at-home" period. In addition to comments from those who are familiar with the theater, we have also received numerous comments from people who say, "This is the perfect opportunity to see opera or ballet!" and "I'd love to see a live performance once the theater reopens!" This has been a meaningful initiative for the New National Theatre, whose mission is to promote and spread the performing arts.
In addition, to allow people to enjoy New National Theatre productions from the comfort of their own homes, we are making plays written specifically for the theater available on our website for two weeks only as part of the "Stay-at-Home Theater: Plays at Home" program. This has also received many hits.
All of us at the New National Theatre would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has made donations and shared kind words in order to support the arts during this situation. Until the day comes when we can safely welcome people back to the theater, we hope that through "Stay-at-Home Theater" we can add some color to your "stay-at-home" time with the performing arts.
