L'Ecole

The body is a symbol of freedom, and the female body symbolizes liberation. Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli's Spring/Summer 2024 collection, ‘L'Ecole’, celebrates femininity and humanity, shining a spotlight on the body. Reflecting ideology, expressing intimacy and individuality, the result conveys a radical feminism. It's the independence of the body from societal expectations and constraints. The comfort of being in one's own skin.

Nudity, not to provoke but rather to exist as a natural state, asserts liberation at the heart of the creations. While fashion was conceived as a means of covering the body, here it enters into an essential exchange between clothing and the feminine inner self, aiming to shift perceptions of nudity. By rejecting notions of sexuality and subverting clichés, the collection explores personal sensuality and the vital interrelationship between clothing and the body.

Skin becomes fabric. Skirts are shorter, allowing for dynamic movement, while daring cuts reveal the body and encourage a rethinking of form. A new technique named by Valentino, Altrilievo (High Relief), carves fabric into seemingly seamless three-dimensional forms. It creates natural shapes—baroque leaves, fruit, flowers, and animals—highlighting our natural state of nudity. This technique is a way of celebrating womanhood, built around the body. Intricate yet simple embellishments create structure, and the silhouette is all dictated by the body, both clothed and naked. Grisaille prints sweep across the forms, fabrics cut away to reveal skin.

Simplicity. Simple garments like T-shirts, shirts and jeans are accentuated by their direct contact with the body. Cotton poplin is used for tailoring, its texture and structure softened to reflect feminine curves. There is tenderness, calm and consideration. Silk T-shirts celebrate the precious expression. Evening gowns are draped in long silhouettes and intricately embroidered. Raw linen and silk offer textural stimulation to the woman who wears them, in a dynamic that is essential and intimate.

The accessories emphasize the relationship between fashion and women, and their freedom. The shoes have low heels, working in tandem with the body to promote movement. The Valentino Garavani 'V Logo Moon' bag flexes with the body, its chain featuring an oval V wrapping around the wrist, uniting the woman and her outfit. The bag is crafted from soft, relaxed double calfskin leather. Sensuality is about the pursuit of pleasure and the enjoyment of the senses. A full-body performance by artist FKA Twigs and her dancers highlights the attitude and emotion of the ’L'Ecole’ collection. Combining music and dance, and placing physical movement at the heart of her creative expression, her always physical performances explore and celebrate the body, its physicality and femininity.
