MUJI will be holding the exhibition "Mingei Movement Film Archive: In Search of Nameless Beauty 1934-2017" at ATELIER MUJI in MUJI Yurakucho from January 27th to March 26th. The Mingei Movement, which included artists such as Muneyoshi Yanagi, Shoji Hamada, and Kanjiro Kawai, advocated the value of crafts as everyday objects used by ordinary people, rather than as works of art. One of its members, Bernard Leach, used rare 16mm film equipment at the time to record the members who founded the Mingei Movement, as well as various local customs and landscapes across Japan. Canadian filmmaker Marty Gross inherited the film and digitized it after it had deteriorated. Marty has continued to review the footage and create Mingei-themed films, as well as unearth hidden video materials in Japan. Through the precious films left behind by these predecessors, the exhibition will explore hints for manufacturing and lifestyles that will connect to the future.
Related events will also be held. On February 2nd, from 3:00 to 4:30 pm, we will welcome Mr. Sugiyama, head of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum, to talk about the work of Muneyoshi Yanagi, Shoji Hamada, Kanjiro Kawai, and Bernard Leach, as well as the Mingei movement. On March 23rd, from 6:30 to 7:20 pm, we will hold a talk event titled "What the Mingei Film Archive Will Legacy to the Future." Producer and director Marty will use footage to explain the films shot by Bernard Leach, as well as the restoration and editing process. Both events are limited to 40 people, and participation is free.
