Isetan The Space, newly opened on the second floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku, is based on the theme of "rediscovering the legends who have built timeless value and discovering those who have the potential to acquire timeless value," and will be hosting an exhibition titled "Living with HERITAGE - Pierre Jeanneret's Posthumous Works and Historically Recognized Furniture."
This exhibition will feature a selection of designer vintage furniture, primarily by Pierre Jeanneret, who is gaining global acclaim, selected from the vintage pieces collected by "Obje'd art" from around the world. In conjunction with the furniture exhibits, the venue will also be proposing living spaces incorporating "HERITAGE," or furniture with high asset value.
By focusing on Pierre Jeanneret, this exhibition hopes to inspire visitors to learn about vintage furniture itself, the background to its creation, and the thoughts and philosophies of its makers, and to inspire them to incorporate valuable vintage furniture into their living spaces and create richer living spaces.
About the Exhibition
This exhibition will be composed of the following four spaces.
No.1 A biography of Pierre Jeanneret / Introducing Pierre Jeanneret
We will introduce the furniture designed by Pierre Jeanneret along with photographs of the buildings constructed as part of the Chandigarh urban planning project, to which Pierre Jeanneret dedicated his life.
No.2 Furniture for Project Chandigarh / Furniture used in Chandigarh
Pierre Jeanneret used materials that were widely available in India at the time, such as rattan and teak, in his designs, creating a system that made it easy for local artisans to produce his works. While these furniture pieces are his own creations, they are also works of art by Indian artisans. Over 100 different types of furniture, including those made from different materials, were created to suit Le Corbusier and his architecture. We will be exhibiting several of these pieces.
No.3 Living with Heritage / Interior coordination for living with masterpieces of furniture
We propose interior spaces incorporating works by Pierre Jeanneret as well as those by Charlotte Perriand and Jean Prouvé, who were close friends of Pierre Jeanneret. We will also coordinate the space with Indian crafts.
No.4 Modern crafts in India / Contemporary Indian crafts
Pierre Jeanneret had a profound influence on modern Indian architecture and design. The Indian furniture workshop "Phantom Hands" was founded under his strong influence. We will introduce their works, which will be passed on to the next generation.

About ISETAN THE SPACE Timeless and Universal Rediscovering the legends who established timeless values and discovering those with the potential to capture timeless values. "ISETAN THE SPACE" is an experimental pop-up space born from the concept of "3less (Timeless, Genderless, Category-less)" to showcase style pioneers whose unique worldviews and innovative spirit captivate people around the world, as well as creations with intrinsic value that transcend the trends of the times. Rather than focusing on the surface of objects, we focus on the thoughts and philosophies of the creators behind them. We hope to create new connections that stem from empathy, while also incorporating the sensibilities and aesthetic sensibilities of the community that cherishes their creativity into the space.
