Salvatore Ferragamo, whose design director, Guillaume Meilland, took over as designer this season, unveiled its Fall/Winter 2017-18 men's collection in Milan on January 15th. Meilland built his menswear career at Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint-Laurent, and Lanvin. The British-inspired wool coats feature long, lean silhouettes and relaxed, voluminous silhouettes. The coats are available in a variety of styles, with large lapels creating soft collars. Each piece features a flowing drape and a lustrous texture that makes the most of the superfine wool and cashmere. The thick striped coats, which retain the classic texture of the fabric, also exude a sense of lightness.
The color palette is subdued, with gray, blue, and brown as the main focus, accented with red, and features tonal checks and other solid tones throughout. Military items such as pea coats and flight jackets also evoke a refined sartorial tradition.
Sportswear such as hoodies, which dominate the trend, and edgy fashion expressions are suppressed, and tailored clothing incorporates youthful details such as shorter jacket lengths and zip-ups, returning to an urban classic orientation. The coordination of cashmere cable knits also seems to be linked to the brand's history of craftsmanship.
The rubber studs on the shark-sole style shoes create a quiet and serene collection that suggests the beginning of a new story for Ferragamo.
