Paul Smith to host Friedrich Nagler's third solo exhibition worldwide

Feb 6, 2015

The Paul Smith SPACE GALLERY in Omotesando will be hosting a solo exhibition titled "The Secret World of Friedrich Nagler 1920-2009" from February 21st to March 31st. Friedrich Nagler was a self-taught artist who created a wide range of works, including sculpture, painting, and plastic and rubber masks. After being forced to leave his hometown of Vienna during World War II, he was imprisoned in the Douglas concentration camp on the Isle of Man, which was known as an artists' camp. There he developed connections with German and Austrian artists, and after the war he worked as a gardener in Hampshire while immersing himself in his own work in a shed built in the garden. Through his hand-carved bone and ivory sculptures, Nagler is said to have seen an affinity between his own work and the decorative arts of the Edo period, and he dreamed of one day holding an exhibition in Japan. Nagler's work was rarely seen even by close friends and family, and he refused to sign autographs, so his surviving works have only been shown publicly twice before. This third solo exhibition, his first in Japan, marks Nagler's dream finally becoming a reality.
