On February 28, 2023, Saint Laurent presented its Winter 2023 women's collection at the Trocadero Gardens.
For the Fall/Winter 2023 collection, Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello instead chose a Saint Laurent woman to represent him, instead rediscovering the essence of Saint Laurent's classic style, combining precision, emotion and reticence. This aesthetic is rigorously reconstructed on a tailored skirt suit, combining it with the brand's unique codes and bringing it to a modern era.
That precision is also evident in the sharp shoulders of bold blazers. It all begins with gesture and is finished with fabric. Structured jackets are paired with flowing layers of fabric, and iconic scarves appear like ribbons on blouses or hanging like stoles, creating an alluring friction.
What's fascinating is how classic pieces like blazers, as well as leather bombers and sharply cut tank tops, are seamlessly integrated into women's wardrobes, effectively breaking down gender stereotypes. Similarly, motifs reminiscent of masculine tailoring, such as pinstripes, tartan and glen plaid, are lightened, thereby imbuing them with a timely femininity.
Recurring fabrics such as chiffon, crêpe de chine and muslin, as well as sheer stockings, accentuate modesty through the alternation of transparency and opacity. The Saint Laurent woman can reveal her body when she chooses, or hide it when she chooses.
Sophisticated details, luxurious materials. A pared-back approach rediscovers timeless looks, reviving Saint Laurent's classic uniform for the modern era. The evening look was kept modern with slim cashmere pants.
The venue was inspired by the ballroom of the InterContinental Hotel, where Saint Laurent presented his Haute Couture collections from 1975 to 2001. Ornate symbols of the era, such as the striking bronze chandelier and the unique shape of the runway, are given new meaning in a modern black box setting.
