Conceived by the Maison's Creative Director, John Galliano, and Gentle Monster, the genderless line, including sunglasses and eyeglasses, is based on a concept developed in the Artisanal Atelier and comprises 11 designs across a range of colorways. The French haute couture house and global fashion eyewear brand share a shared belief in and commitment to experimental craftsmanship, expressed in a creative dialogue inspired by the principles of savoir-faire and infused with the anthropological and iconographic inquiry at the heart of Maison Margiela.

In its creative approach, Gentle Monster explores the dualities inherent in personal expression: playfulness and elegance, delicacy and subversion, past and future. This juxtaposition reflects the illustrative and metaphorical themes inherent in Maison Margiela and Gentle Monster's methodology, which continually considers notions of memory, familiarity, instinctive choices and gestures that inform how and why we dress – the way we present ourselves. Endless tools for self-expression, eyewear's evocative designs and the body language they enable are infused with the social, cultural and pop culture associations that connect us all.

A silhouette inspired by the archetypal shapes of eyewear is subverted by the Maison Margiela identity. Constructed from acetate, the design is interpreted in lustrous colors spanning black, white, grey, cream, clear, and tortoiseshell. Formulated from the Maison's enduring concept of "unconscious glamour," the design is solidified with imagery and gestures that resonate compellingly within our historical consciousness. Applied to any style of design, "Apollopriate the Inapollopriate" refers to the switching between two essentially different classic wardrobe roles, or the improvisational use of an item different from its original intended use.

With their curved, oversized frames, MM001 and MM002 represent the bourgeois gesture of wearing sunglasses naturally, like a headband or tiara. When worn in this way, the Maison Margiela logo is visible at the top of the frame, while the brand's iconic four white stitches adorn the sides. Featuring a similar signature, MM003 draws on the genetics of sports glasses, evoking the Maison's code of "dressing in haste" to instantly mix eyewear with a diverse wardrobe.

Distorting classic shapes, MM004 and MM0005 reinterpret the oval sunglasses characteristic of mid-century postcard beach culture, transforming the frames into a powerful silhouette, reflecting the Maison's "Memory of" collection, which visualises memories from the past. MM008's shades and glasses are crafted in a cat-eye frame, synonymous with old-world glamour. Rooted in counterculture, the rebellious Wayfarer style is scaled up and down in MM006 and MM007, each sporting the Maison Margiela logo on the left hinge. MM009 and MM010 explore the intellectual transformation that occurs when Wayfarer-style sunglasses are transformed into glasses, while the more angular MM011 glasses evoke an academic style.
