Photographer Koichiro Iwamoto's solo exhibition, featuring memories of long ago in the snowy mountains

Event Date:2019.04.13-04.21
Apr 8, 2019
Photographer Koichiro Iwamoto will hold a photo exhibition titled "isolation" at CLASS, an art gallery in Jingumae, Tokyo, from April 13th to 21st.

Koichiro Iwamoto was born in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture in 1992 and is currently 26 years old. He began taking photographs with a film camera inherited from his father, and in 2015 began studying photography under Itaru Hirama. He worked in the photography department of Bunka Publishing Bureau in 2016 before going independent in 2018.

Soon after going independent, he received offers from media outlets such as i-D Japan and fashion brands, and today he continues to receive a steady stream of requests for a variety of photography, including fashion photography and portraits. This time, he will be exhibiting newly taken photographs of pure white snow-capped mountains, facing memories of loneliness, spaces where he cannot blend in, landscapes that become one with him, and the unique beauty that he had been harboring deep within his heart.

Below is a comment from Iwamoto about this exhibition.

"Standing there, in the vast world created by the accumulated snow, memories of my own past flashed through my mind in an instant. Do I now find this pure scene beautiful? Can "pure white" stay white forever? What does "the past" really mean to me? After these thoughts ran through my mind, I recalled that world, and the pure white scene was tinged with rust. The snow that will one day melt and the imaginary rust posed a powerful question to me: what is beauty? For this exhibition, I was approached by Yu Yamaki, and we invited musician Kaito Sakuma a.k.a. BATIC, who shared the concept, to create a space where photography and music coexist. I hope you will first close your eyes, experience the sound, then look at my photographs and experience the meaning of 'isolation.'" Koichiro Iwamoto

The venue will also feature a 3D sound piece by musician Kaito Sakuma a.k.a. BATIC, inspired by the unique sounds and silence of snowy mountains, as well as works using bone conduction materials. It's a space where photography and music coexist.

In addition, during the exhibition, on April 20th, there will be a talk event featuring Tatsuya Yamaguchi, an editor close to Iwamoto, and Yu Yamaki, head of "CURIOSITY," who is curating the exhibition.

This is a collaboration between promising new creators who will lead the next generation, and is a must-see. Be sure to come and see it.
