Photographer Shuya Aoki is holding a photo exhibition titled "autonomy" at Terrace Square in Kanda, Tokyo.
Born in Akita Prefecture in 1998, Shuya Aoki is now 20 years old. After graduating from high school, he dropped out of the photography department at Tokyo Polytechnic University and is currently studying under photographer Yusuke Yamatani. Last year, despite being just 19 years old, he was active in a wide range of industries, creating visuals for UNDERCOVER and the music and film festival MOOSIC LAB. He is also actively producing his own work, publishing the zine "shell" and holding exhibitions at Midori-so, Shonan Tsutaya Bookstore, and Shibuya's photography select shop Zakura. The current photo exhibition, "autonomy," is the 12th in the Terrace Square Photo Exhibition series, which began in 2016. Previous exhibitors include Takahashi Manami, Kawashima Kotori, and Omori Katsumi. The 12th artist, Aoki Shuuno, presents a new series of images created using AI-generated images from photographs he himself took. These unrealistic images, born from a computer that could be described as unconscious to the artist, prompt us to consider the very act of photography itself. While seemingly buried in digital noise, they emerge vividly and become even more intense. At the same time, the act of filtering one's own photographs from the saturation of images available to the world via the internet and smartphones raises the question: What is an image? What is a photograph?
