Manga Art Hotel, a capsule hotel with 5,000 manga books, opens in Jimbocho, Tokyo

Jan 9, 2019
In February 2019, MANGA ART HOTEL, TOKYO, a hostel offering a manga experience with an "art" theme, opened in Tokyo's Jimbocho area.

In 2020, when Tokyo will be in the spotlight from around the world, MANGA ART HOTEL TOKYO will open as a place offering an unprecedented accommodation experience, aiming to increase the number of foreign tourists to Japan and foster a deeper love for the country.

Focusing on "manga," one of Japan's proud cultural industries, the hotel will thoroughly select manga from a broad perspective of "art," providing a special accommodation experience that allows guests to hold and read manga in their hands, creating the encounters and emotions that can only be experienced on paper. The operators themselves act as hosts and communicate directly with guests, aiming to promote exchange between a wide variety of people and cultures through manga.

The bookshelves inside the facility, which makes you feel as if you've wandered into another dimension, are filled with manga curated from an artistic perspective, and each of the more than 5,000 titles comes with a recommendation comment. This creates an opportunity for visitors to discover fascinating manga that they might not have noticed just by seeing them on display in the store. Another key point is that the selection of books is different between the men's and women's floors. English versions of manga are also available for foreign tourists. All books are also available for purchase.

We have also collaborated with Nells, a popular pajama brand with the innovative concept of "pajamas that don't need to be changed, for those who want everything." We will be selling original goods. The first season of this collaboration is based on the theme of manga, and will see the development of original pajamas that combine the high design quality that is characteristic of Nells pajamas and the need to not change clothes, allowing you to immerse yourself in the world of manga in both body and mind, for an even more immersive overnight stay.

In addition, the facility has appointed up-and-coming architect Tan Yamanouchi, winner of the Architects of the Year Award in 2017, as head of architectural design and brand development, creating a space that is distinctly Japanese, but distinctly Japanese. By combining a variety of architectural materials, furniture, wall-to-wall bookshelves, and 5,000 paper manga volumes, the facility creates a space reminiscent of an "ecosystem where diverse organisms coexist."

Experience a sleepless, engrossing overnight stay, immersed solely in the world of manga.
