The largest solo exhibition of the career of Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota, whose work has been internationally successful, will be held at the Mori Art Museum in Roppongi, Tokyo from June 20 to October 27, 2019, showcasing the full scope of her 20-year career. Chiharu Shiota, "Uncertain Journey," 2016, steel frame, red wool yarn. Installation view: "Uncertain Journey," Brain | Southern, Berlin, 2016. Photo: Christian Glaeser. Based in Berlin and active globally, Chiharu Shiota is known for her performances and installations that express intangible elements such as memory, anxiety, dreams, and silence. While often drawing from personal experiences, her work has attracted a wide range of audiences worldwide by questioning universal concepts such as identity, boundaries, and existence. Her signature series are her stunning installations, in which black and red threads are strung across the entire space.
This will be Shiota's largest solo exhibition to date, and will feature six large-scale installations, as well as three-dimensional works, performance videos, photographs, drawings, and related materials from stage art, providing the first opportunity to comprehensively experience her work spanning 20 years. The subtitle, "The Soul Trembles," reflects the artist's desire to communicate to others the movements of her heart, trembling with inexpressible emotions.
Through this exhibition, which marks the culmination of Shiota's consistent pursuit of "presence in absence," visitors will be able to experience the meaning of life, life's journey, and the subtleties of the soul.
