Citizen celebrates its 100th anniversary with a fantastic installation by Tsuyoshi Tane at Omotesando Spiral!

Event Date:2018.12.07-12.16
Nov 29, 2018
CITIZEN will be holding the "CITIZEN "We Celebrate Time" 100th Anniversary Exhibition" from December 7th to 16th at Spiral Garden in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo, to commemorate the company's 100th anniversary.

The exhibition will feature the latest fantastical installation by architect Tsuyoshi Tane. Since its founding in 1918, CITIZEN has always challenged itself to develop new technologies and continue to manufacture watches. In 1976, CITIZEN developed its own unique technology, Eco-Drive, which converts light into electrical energy to keep time. This system, which operates anywhere on Earth as long as there is light, can be said to be "a watch that citizens of the world can use equally," and it also embodies the essence of the company's spirit. Citizen and Tsuyoshi Tane have been working together on the theme of "light and time" for six years to create the installation "LIGHT is TIME." This time, approximately 72,000 baseplates, the fundamental components that support all watch components, are used to create a fantastical space with a new design. Other exhibits include Citizen's 100-year history of incorporating the latest technologies into wristwatches, as well as footage and tools from the manufacture's production floor, where parts are made and finished products are produced. Citizen's latest watches and the art book "Shuji Terayama: Fantasy Surrounding Time," published to commemorate the company's 100th anniversary, will also be available for purchase. During the exhibition, a "Communication Program" will be held, exploring the possibilities of time and the will and expression that connect to the future. On December 7th and 8th, dancer Aoi Yamada, who has attracted attention from various fields, including through his music videos and unique aura, will perform "I am Time," a performance in the exhibition space in which he becomes the incarnation of time and creates zero seconds every hour.
Also, on December 9th, as a children's program, Spiral Cafe will host a talk event themed on "We are in the Universe and Time," with lecturer Fujisawa Kenta, a specialist in chronology and astronomy, discussing the nature of "time," which passes by casually in our lives. In a fantastical space, parents and children can take their time to reflect on time.
Details of other programs and how to apply can be found on the special page (https://citizen.jp/100th/event/spiral/index.html).
