Tokyo pop band I Don't Like Mondays.'s secret live performance for couples only [Report]

Oct 22, 2018

On October 12th, 2018, "I Don't Like Mondays. x Spotify Exclusive Live" was held at a location in Tokyo as a collaboration between I Don't Like Mondays (hereinafter referred to as IDLMs.) and Spotify Japan.

The event was a secret live performance, inviting 15 couples (30 people in all), selected from applicants on Twitter. IDLMs. commented that "this was the first time we'd performed with a band set in such close proximity," and we report on this precious one-night-only live performance.

A Couples-Only Event Finally Comes to Life

The secret live performance began with a call from Yu (Vocalist) asking, "Today's concert is exclusive to 15 couples, 30 people in all, so it's going to feel really exclusive, and we'd love to have fun with you all. Are you ready?" Instead of an acoustic setup, the band performed a total of eight songs, starting with "Shape of Love," followed by "FIRE," "Super Special," "My Girl," "LEMONADE," "A GIRL IN THE CITY," "Girlfriend," and "Freaky boy."

"It's been a while since we've performed in such close proximity. Even though we're this close today, it doesn't really feel like an acoustic set," said Yu (vocals). Following this, Akiki (drums) commented, "At first, we were thinking of performing with an acoustic set, which everyone is used to, but we wanted to try something more like a band set that wasn't too extreme, so that people could enjoy a sense of unity from a close distance," revealing that this performance was a first for the band.

Kenji (bass) also spoke with glee about having his long-held wish come true, saying, "We've always said that we wanted couples to enjoy our shows. I'm glad that we've finally been able to hold this kind of event."

SHUKI (Dr.)'s Spotify Playlist "From ASIA To The World. by SHUKI"

SHUKI was concerned about fans who seemed nervous about the close proximity and bright venue, saying, "Today, let's make it feel like you're all coming to our house and we're playing for you!" He also lightened the mood by saying, "This is a collaboration with Spotify, so do you all actually use Spotify? It seems like you don't, but is that okay? (laughs)."

According to "Spotify for Artists," which allows artists to analyze detailed data such as the regions and number of plays of their songs, approximately 20% of IDLMs.'s streams are from overseas. Akiki (Dr.), who began creating playlists around the time of the release of his EP "A GIRL IN THE CITY" in August 2018, also commented on Spotify's distinctive playlist culture, saying, "The way people listen to music these days is increasingly through playlists created by famous musicians and DJs, where people discover new music."

Finally, he said, "We've just started our tour and will be hitting the road soon, so please come along if you can. We'll also be performing at a few events outside of our live shows, so I hope to see you there." A commemorative photo was taken with the fans, bringing the one-night-only special secret live show to a close.
