Exhibition of Jean-Paul Goude, the legendary image maker, to showcase collaborative works with Chanel and personal works

Event Date:2018.11.28-12.25
Sep 8, 2018

Jean-Paul Goude's exhibition "In Goude we trust!" will be held at CHANEL NEXUS HALL in Tokyo's Ginza district from November 28th. Jean-Paul Goude was born in France in 1940. He began his career as an illustrator in Paris in the early 1960s and became artistic director of the American magazine Esquire in the 1970s. His diverse activities, including serving as artistic director for the 1989 parade commemorating the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution, span photography, dance, video, and graphic design, and he is known as a rare image-maker. This exhibition, curated by Goude himself, is divided into two parts: a selection of highlights from Goude's collaborations with CHANEL to date, and Goude's most personal artwork, created using a wide variety of media. The first part of the exhibition will feature rare collaborative works, including a commercial for the fragrance "Coco," featuring actress Vanessa Paradis as a singing bird in a cage; a campaign for the fragrance "Chance Eau Vive" featuring the "Chance Girls"; and the "Fire Installation" created for the fine jewelry collection "The Five Elements," released in 2001. The second part will feature prints of Goude's drawings and sketches related to his creative process, as well as a giant panoramic panel showcasing the spectacular installation of illuminated sculptures exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2017. Additionally, a mini-theater within the venue will screen "So Far So Goude," a 90-minute film summarizing Goude's work and activities from his early days to the present. Along with numerous unique artworks that overturn conventional concepts of expression, the allegorical images that Goude has created over the years and that have become etched in people's subconscious memories will also be a major highlight of this exhibition.
