FH Editorial Department (hereinafter FH): When it comes to party makeup, most people probably just go for a heavier look than usual.

Hair & Makeup Artist Murakami Aya (hereafter, Murakami):Looking glamorous is a given at parties, so many people end up overdoing it. People tend to think that their regular makeup won't do the trick, so they should just make it heavier. But that's not the case at all; just adding a little extra heaviness to your regular makeup is fine.

FH: When it comes to just one detail, I think a lot of women aim for big, open eyes.

Murakami:Using pearly or sparkly makeup to create a glamorous, luxurious look comes across as childish, so that's a no-no! Adult party makeup works better if you focus on being "different from usual" rather than "glamorous." Just making people realize that your makeup is different from your usual style is enough to create a party vibe. Finally, to give your face a defined look, make sure to draw your eyebrows neatly.

FH: For adult women, going overboard at weddings and parties only leaves a bad impression. So, what kind of makeup do you recommend specifically?

Murakami: Something that anyone can easily do is change up the look by using a different lip color than usual. For example, in this look, I used a color between red and orange. Just by using a darker lip color, your face will look more defined and your expression will appear more mature. The red lip color that is often used at parties can actually be difficult to pull off, as it can make your face look older. Choose a deeper color, such as a brown or orange.

FH: I see. If I wear my lipstick darker than usual, how minimal should my other makeup be?

Murakami:The rule is to wear your eyebrows and lipstick darker and keep your eyeshadow natural, creating a clear contrast. Just add a little shine to your eyelids, and you don't need eyeliner or mascara. I think it'll make you feel more at ease if you treat party makeup like you would accessories and think of it as something fun to do. Feeling like you have to do it can always have a negative effect.

FH: If you master this, you won't have to do any major touch-ups when heading to a party after work!

Murakami:If it's after work, just put on some big earrings, darken your lipstick, and you're done! That's all you need. Anyone can do it easily, right?
