Director Ru Kuwahata, also known as Kahoru Kuwahata, was nominated for the 90th Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for her stop-motion animation film "Negative Space." Based in the US, she and her husband, director Max Porter, form the animation duo "Tiny Inventions." The couple also provide voice acting for this film, produced in 2010.

The meticulous backgrounds, props, lighting, and characters create a visual experience that blurs the line between reality and fantasy, immersing viewers in a unique worldview. The film's concept is based on the director's own experiences and real events (the Zodiac Killer incident, featured in the film, is an actual unsolved serial murder case that took place in San Francisco).
