Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo to host solo exhibition by renowned French artist Bertrand Lavier

Event Date:2018.04.19-09.24
Apr 14, 2018

Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo in Omotesando, Tokyo, will be hosting "Medley," a solo exhibition by French artist Bertrand Lavier, from April 19th.

Bertrand Lavier was born in Châtillon-sur-Seine, France in 1949. After studying horticulture at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Horticulture in Versailles, a field that would continue to influence his artistic perspective, he began his artistic career in the early 1970s. Known as an artist who had a strong influence on the appropriation art movement of the 1980s and 1990s, his works are characterized by their use of a wide variety of media, with an approach that transcends the traditional expressive methods of painting and sculpture. This exhibition is part of the "Hors-Les-Murs" project, which, under the artistic direction of the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, France, presents previously unseen works from the museum's collection at Espaces Louis Vuitton around the world (Tokyo, Munich, Beijing, and Venice). The exhibition showcases Bertrand Lavier's distinctive style and categories through seven works, including "ATOMIUM" (2007), which employs a "Vincent Van Gogh-esque" painting technique; "LA BOCCA SUR ZANKER" (2005), a humorous interpretation of the ready-made; and "EMPRESS OF INDIA II" (2005), a neon installation. The exhibition explores Lavier's unique talent, constantly evolving and experimenting with strategies of interpretation, substitution, and transformation.
