Ambush's first runway show in Tokyo: Street fashion in sync with the world [2018-19 Fall/Winter Collection]

Mar 27, 2018

The runway, held at Starrise Tower beneath Tokyo Tower, featured two completely different spaces set up within the building. Guests received different colored tape around their wrists at the entrance and were guided to different rooms, where they watched the same looks at different times in completely different environments and presentations.

One area was seated on a grassy area, completely unaware of each other's presence. The other area was a standing area with a runway at head level, where guests waited for the start of the show. In the lawn zone, guests were served original bento lunches packaged in Amazon boxes. The contents were made by Ghetto Gastro, a group of chefs from the Bronx, New York. After the show, the runway in the standing area was transformed into a bar counter, where Moët champagne was served. AMBUSH's Fall/Winter 2018-19 collection, which directly captured the current fashion scene's hip-hop culture, luxury streetwear brands, and the power of Amazon, was shown on March 20th as part of "AT TOKYO," a special event at Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO 2018 A/W (AFWT). This season's collection, which was first presented in January as an installation in Paris, featured oversized athletic pieces complemented by the brand's core accessories, creating a striking presence. Based on the theme of "NOBO," the area north of Seattle where designer YOON spent his childhood, this season's story is woven with ideas of athleisure and grunge. Patched denim knitwear, drawstring hoodies, cutout duffle coats, and skirting with checked flannel shirts—all styles would easily blend in at either venue. Items like down jackets and mountain jackets are unisex, making them easily accessible globally. A gun club check coat, a seasonal trend, was paired with a vest reminiscent of a gun holder. The mix of various elements, combined with the brand's partner, Verval, a DJ, offered ample opportunities for sampling. The high quality of the mixdown, mastering, and finishing work was evident on the runway, demonstrating why this brand is currently regarded as a core presence in the scene. The venue was also filled with designers, models, and DJs representing Tokyo's street scene, members of the EXILE family, and members of LDH. Members of Spaghetti Boys and NO VACANCY INN, who, like Ambush, have garnered attention for their DJing and hyped brand development, also came from New York to Japan and livened up the event with their performances. Furthermore, a wireless headphone collaboration with Beats by Dr. Dre was announced, and crowds gathered under Tokyo Tower until late into the night, creating a night worthy of the city's leading fashion week.
