Minamimachida to become a new hub for living following Futakotamagawa! Outline of redevelopment of former Grandberry Mall site finalized

Jan 3, 2018
Tokyu Corporation has announced plans to develop a new commercial facility in the area surrounding Minamimachida Station on the Den-en-toshi Line, integrating it with the neighboring station and Tsuruma Park. This project is based on the "Minamimachida Hub Creation Urban Development Project," which Tokyu Corporation and Machida City are jointly promoting under an urban development agreement.

Overview of the commercial facility plan
The project aims to improve accessibility between the station, park, and commercial facilities, and to create a vibrant shopping experience through a commercial facility that blends in with the surrounding environment. The site of Grandberry Mall, which closed on February 12, 2017, will be redeveloped.

The facility's concept is "Amusement Park for Everyday Life - an entertainment park filled with the 'fun' of everyday life," and it will consist of seven plazas offering different ways to enjoy the area, including a commercial facility with a "shopping space where you can experience the joy of walking around town," an experiential "entertainment space for everyday life" themed around food, play, and lifestyle, and a plaza where events by artists and performers can be held and where you can experience the rich nature.

The site will be an open mall, mainly on two or three levels, and a pedestrian network will be developed to improve mobility from the station to the commercial facility, Tsuruma Park, and the surrounding residential area. Pablo Laguarda, a designer from the world-renowned Laguarda Law & Tanamachi Architects, was hired to design the commercial facility.

The design concept is a "village-style space," aiming to harmonize with the city and nature while creating an attractive shopping complex where new discoveries and encounters await with every stroll. The number of stores will be doubled to approximately 200, further expanding the popular outlet mall at "Grandberry Mall," and offering lifestyle-oriented retail and dining options.

Also, during the same period, Minami-Machida Station underwent renovations, creating an open station space that blends in with the park and shopping complex. Escalators and platform doors were installed to improve safety and convenience, enriching the lives of local residents and visitors. It will create a completely new lifestyle center that combines elements of time-saving and entertainment.
