Michael Kenna, a landscape photographer with a huge following in Japan, is known for his love of the delicate light of dusk and dawn, and for creating beautiful, mystical, and meditative works using traditional, straightforward techniques.

The southern Italian region of Abruzzo, where this series was shot, is said to be one of the richest flora in Europe, with more than one-third of its area made up of parks and nature reserves. Michael Kenna was deeply inspired by the region's fascinating way of life, which evokes a connection between humans and nature that dates back to ancient times, and he traveled to tranquil, poetic places to photograph trees, mountain landscapes, medieval ruins, ancient villages, and countryside that retains traditional farming methods.
