An exhibition of three-dimensional works by the late photographer, Sakae Takahashi, will be held in Kyoto and Tokyo

Dec 6, 2014

"REPOSING SOULS," an exhibition of three-dimensional works by advertising photographer Takahashi Sakae, who passed away suddenly this September, has been running since December 3rd at Gallery SUGATA in Kyoto (271-1 Takoyakushicho, Muromachi-dori Nijo-sagaru, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto). This exhibition was originally planned as a two-person show with stylist and accessory designer Katayama Yuko, which began this summer, and Takahashi's posthumous works were set up and exhibited by Katayama and Takahashi's family and acquaintances. Takahashi Sakae was born in 1945. He has been active as an advertising photographer based in Osaka since the early 1970s. Known for his fashion-related work, including pieces from the Kobe Fashion Museum's collection, Hiroko Koshino's 2004 collection, and Yoshitaka Amano x Yoshiki Hishinuma's Eve exhibition (2010), Takahashi's work has once again garnered attention with the current exhibition "TOKYO VIVID," featuring photographs of Tokyo teens taken on the Panasonic LUMIX GM camera site.

This exhibition focuses on Takahashi's artistic side, which he began working on in earnest several years ago. His assemblages of driftwood, animal bones, and old farm equipment are too precisely designed to be called junk art, and they stand primitively in the Japanese-style space of the exhibition.

His iron works have been used in a TV commercial for the Public Advertising Council's environmental division, and many visitors will recognize Takahashi's style when they are displayed in the autumn leaves garden. While the exhibition is a sad farewell to Takahashi's talent, which earned him the second prize at the Asahi Contemporary Craft Exhibition the same year he first entered the exhibition, the fact that his work was exhibited alongside Katayama's button accessories demonstrates that Takahashi's work, both photographic and three-dimensional, was also present in the fashion field.

Some of the works in the exhibition will then be exhibited in Kyoto at the same gallery in the Chaniwa Zenkashoin gallery on the 5th floor of Shibuya Hikarie ShinQs from December 25th to January 14th.
