Shinjuku Nakamuraya to Grand Open in October, Featuring Coach's First Concept Store in Japan

Jul 1, 2014

Shinjuku Nakamuraya (3-26-13 Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo), which has been closed due to redevelopment, will hold its grand reopening on October 29th with a total of 12 stores.

Four stores will open: Granna, a dining restaurant showcasing the international cuisine culinary techniques the store has cultivated; Bonna, a delicatessen and sweets shop offering carefully selected Japanese and Western confections and specialty curry breads; Manna, a restaurant and cafe serving traditional dishes including Indian curry; and Nakamuraya Salon Museum, a casual art gallery.

The first and second floors will house a new concept store for Coach, its first in Japan. Following the next-generation concept store developed by Executive Creative Director Stuart Vevers in collaboration with New York design firm Studio Sofield, the store will offer a head-to-toe lineup of items, including not only bags, small leather goods, and accessories, but also apparel and footwear. The opening of a Tiffany store nearby in the same month is expected to change the look of Shinjuku Street.

Other tenants include salons and beauty salons such as "Olive's by neolive," and restaurants such as the modern Japanese dining establishment "KICHIRI." Mitsui Fudosan will be responsible for the development plan, design, construction management, and tenant recruitment up until the building's completion. After completion, the company will also be responsible for the master lease to stores other than Nakamuraya and the operation and management of the facility.

Nakamuraya was founded in 1901 as a bakery in front of the main gate of the University of Tokyo in Hongo, Tokyo. In 2009, the main store moved to its current location and began manufacturing and selling Japanese sweets. In the Taisho era, Western sweets were also introduced. A cafe was opened in 1952. The store has been closed since October 2011 due to redevelopment. The store currently operates the Shinjuku Nakamuraya Restaurant in the adjacent Shinjuku Takano Building, and sells sweets and food products through mail order.
