A design book featuring signatures from global companies and organizations [Recommended by Daikanyama T-Site]

Mar 6, 2015

Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "must-read books" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Friday, Daikanyama T-Site (17-5 Sarugaku-cho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) will introduce a book selection.

■ "MANUALS 2" by Adrian Shaughnessy and Tony Brook

This is the second volume following "MANUALS." Like the previous volume, it introduces signatures (design instructions) that compile the CI (corporate identity) and VI (visual identity) of American and European companies.

This volume focuses on American and European companies and organizations, featuring a total of 20 companies, including IBM, Westinghouse, Canada's Rail, Bell, Nord, PTT, and the Montreal Olympics. As expected of global companies that stake their prestige on these designs, the designers employed are an impressive lineup. The foreword was contributed by Lance Wyman, designer of the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Documents like Signature are originally published for internal use and are extremely rare, so the fact that such a large number of copies have been collected is commendable. A valuable resource, this is a must-read for designers. Unit Editions, the publisher of this book, is an independent British publishing house founded by the book's authors, writer and designer Adrian Shaughnessy, and designer Tony Brook. Based on the concept of "books by designers, for designers," each volume is outstanding, with high-quality visuals and in-depth content. This is the editing ability that only two people with many years of experience in the design world can achieve.
