Now that I'm in Paris, I'll share my food review of Milan. It's been 18 years since my last visit to Italy, and the food was just as delicious. Surprisingly, I'm interested in food, enough to collect all the volumes of "Oishinbo." Humans need food to survive, after all. So, in between touring my collection, I'd like to introduce some recommended restaurants I visited.
When you think of Italy, you think of pizza. Milan's classic pizzeria, Spontini, serves thick, fluffy pizzas similar to American pizzas. The menu is incredibly simple, with only small and large Margheritas. It's set to open in Tokyo this summer, so it's sure to be a hot topic in Japan. Incidentally, while Italian pizza is often associated with thin, crispy pizzas, the real thing is apparently a little watery.
Carlo e Camilla in Segheria, housed in a renovated pharmaceutical factory, is a stylish and popular restaurant run by a celebrity chef. Everyone sits around a long, side-by-side table, reminiscent of "The Last Supper." The crisscrossed tables resemble a cross, creating a religious atmosphere along with the interior. Enjoy innovative Italian cuisine using a variety of ingredients.
Finally, fast(?) food. Hiroo's French fry shop, AND THE FRIET, is all the rage in Japan, but fries are also huge in Milan. Amsterdam Chips, which opened last year, has been the talk of the town. Apparently, there were lines when it first opened. When I visited, the crowds were relentless, and fries were selling like hotcakes. The menu, which also offers a simple menu, only allows you to choose the size of fries and the sauce. Is this kind of pristine, manly food really going to be popular? As for the taste, it's similar to Freshness Burger fries. There are no bad fries in the world. This place looks like it might be coming to Japan.
I can't wait for the food-themed Milan Expo in May.
