Aman Spa Experience 1/2 -- Japanese Traditions and Customs Transformed into Exquisite Treatments

Mar 16, 2015

Aman Tokyo, Aman's first urban hotel, opened in Otemachi last December. The Aman Spa, covering 2,500 square meters over two floors, is already accepting reservations from non-guests and members. The spa's most distinctive feature is its incorporation of traditional Japanese practices into its water features and treatments. The traditional Japanese baths, featuring cypress tubs in the washing area, feature "kakemizu" (water poured over the body), representing the ancient Shinto practice of "misogi" (purification). Treatments in one of the eight treatment suites also begin with a foot bath using Japanese herbs and salt. One of the programs available for reservations by visitors is the 120-minute "Seasonal Journey," which, as its name suggests, is a seasonal menu that combines the support needed by the body and mind for each season. During the spring months of March through May, Aman offers treatments tailored to regenerate the body after a winter's slumber. These treatments utilize "magnolia" essential oil, which awakens the body and mind. This oil is added to scrubs along with high-quality clay, salt, green tea, and camellia oil imported from Niigata, and then used in full-body massages with Japanese rice oil. The scent is intended to support the unsettled feelings of spring and restore balance to the body and mind (120 minutes/¥46,000). Meanwhile, the two-and-a-half-hour "Aman Tokyo Signature Journey" is a precious treatment that draws on the power of the Japanese camphor tree, revered for its spiritual strength. It also begins with a foot bath, followed by a body scrub made with Japanese camphor powder and clay, and an incredibly thorough massage using "kuromoji" (black moji) essential oil, extracted from trees in the laurel family (150 minutes/¥56,000). To be continued. *Prices do not include 13% service charge and 8% consumption tax. Reservations and inquiries: amantokyo.com 03-5224-3344
