■ "Weingart: The Man and the Machine" by Susan Knapp
Wolfgang Weingart was an internationally acclaimed typographer based in Basel, Switzerland. He became a teacher at the Basel School of Design in 1968, succeeding typographer Emil Ruder, who was involved in the school's founding. He taught more than 400 students until his retirement in 2004.
This book contains many previously untold stories, such as Weingart's strong personality, his scathing school critiques, and his bar banter, as told by 77 students. It also compiles a record of approximately 30 years of typography education, including a program of basic assignments backed by Ruder's experience as a typographer.
It is a valuable resource for examining how typography education in Basel has changed since Ruder's death.
