"DAIDO IN COLOR," an exhibition of color photographs by photographer Daido Moriyama, will be held at Art Space AM in Harajuku, Tokyo, from December 15 to January 30, 2016. While the majority of his work, shot from the late 1960s to the early 1980s, consisted of monochrome photographs, he also had the opportunity to take street snapshots on color reversal film for commissions from graphic magazines. This exhibition focuses on these color photographs, showcasing 150 8x10-inch prints. It was during this period that he also shot the nude photographs for a year-long series in Weekly Playboy (1970-1971) and the bondage photographs for "Mayfly," a series he produced with artist Oniroku Dan, in order to raise funds for an overseas business trip.

Moriyama said, "With monochrome, I can manipulate the print and make it grainy, but I can't do that with color, and I don't even think about it. With color, I photograph the mundane places and vivid colors of Tokyo, Japan. Simply put, monochrome has impression, symbolism, and abstraction, but color has a pop, clear, junky, and in a good way, thin feel. Monochrome is more emotional, color is more mundane. I have both inside me, so they are both me. You can't separate them."
