On December 18th, sacai will release a capsule collection featuring graphics from the legendary New York disco, Paradise Garage. Paradise Garage existed on King Street in New York from the late 1970s to the early 1980s, and was home to legendary DJ Larry Levan. The name comes from the disco's location in a parking lot, and it began as a place where everyone could join in and dance and have fun, regardless of race, culture, or gender. For its 2016 Spring/Summer Men's Collection and Pre-Spring 2016 Collection, sacai will release five items, including T-shirts, sweatshirts, and military jackets, featuring vintage Paradise Garage graphics embroidered or printed. Under the theme of "Hybrid Mash Up," the collection deconstructs and reconstructs various parts, blending not only materials and items but also eras, tastes, cultures, and seasons to create a chaotic yet new style. A portion of the proceeds from the collection will be donated to Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC), America's first HIV and AIDS support organization and owner of the logo. Paradise Garage co-founder Mel Cheren was one of the music industry's earliest activists in the HIV and AIDS crisis in the early '80s. The dance music industry was hit hard early on by the HIV epidemic, with singers, DJs, producers, and club owners dying from AIDS-related complications.
