Auspicious sweets essential for Kanazawa's New Year: Morihachi's red and white monaka "Fukuume" [Winter Souvenir]

Dec 30, 2015

The end of the year and the beginning of the new year are a time when many people bring gifts, such as seasonal greetings and people returning home. FASHION HEADLINE presents "winter gifts" selected by fashion and beauty industry professionals. If you're having trouble deciding what to bring, check out this list of top gifts endorsed by these connoisseurs.

This time, we asked Makoto Ikeda, director and curator of Good People & Good Coffee, a coffee stand in Ikejiri-Ohashi that naturally draws people with its fragrant coffee and cozy atmosphere, for his recommended gifts.

Ikeda's recommendation is Morihachi's "Fukuume" (147 yen each). He says it's an essential New Year's treat in Kanazawa. The red and white monaka (bean-jam) shaped like a plum blossom is a celebratory sweet associated with the Maeda family, and it brightens up the New Year in Kanazawa, the castle town of Kaga's million koku domain. Ikeda, a Kanazawa native, also told us, "I eat Fukuume at my parents' house during the New Year."

If you're curious about the inside of the mochi, it's filled with well-kneaded red bean paste, and the surface of the pastry is sprinkled with sugar. The slightly hard bean paste melts beautifully in your mouth, giving it a very refined taste. It goes best with a strong cup of matcha. Why not try this Kanazawa New Year's treat at least once? *Moriyachi's "Fukuume" for 2015 will be on sale until January 3, 2016.
