"CULTURE CHANEL" exhibition traces the life of Gabrielle Chanel, with Chapter 7 focusing on the theme of "The Reading Woman"

Jun 2, 2016

CHANEL will hold the exhibition "CULTURE CHANEL, The Woman who reads" at Ca' Pesaro International Museum of Contemporary Art in Venice from September 17th to January 8th, 2017.
"CULTURE CHANEL" is an exhibition project launched by CHANEL in 2007, in which French curator Jean-Louis Froment traces the history of the brand and the life of Gabrielle Chanel, focusing on a different theme each time. Previous exhibitions have included the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai, the National Museum of China in Beijing, the Guangzhou Opera House, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and Dongdaemun Design Plaza in South Korea.
This seventh exhibition evokes Gabrielle Chanel's creative world, focusing on her relationship with books and reading. From her lonely childhood in the Aubazine orphanage to her later years, Gabrielle Chanel was guided by a variety of books and their authors, nurturing her imagination, engaging in mystical explorations of the invisible, and shaping her unique worldview. Her reading ranges from classical to contemporary, including Homer, Plato, Virgil, Sophocles, Lucretius, Dante, Montaigne, Cervantes, the Duchess of Sévigné, and Stéphane Mallarmé.

The exhibition will examine books and writing from a modern perspective, showcasing visual similarities and parallels, and highlight the world of poetry that echoes Gabrielle Chanel's creative concept. Numerous dedications, historical documents, photographs, and illustrations are displayed alongside fashion items, providing a library-like insight into Gabrielle Chanel's aesthetic sensibility, her taste for classicism and the Baroque, and her love of Russia and Venice. Also on display will be art from her Paris apartment, as well as jewelry and perfumes, all on public display for the first time.
