Gerhard Richter's exhibition "Abstrakt" currently being held at Espace Louis Vuitton Osaka has been extended

Event Date:2021.11.19-2022.05.15
Mar 25, 2022

Espace Louis Vuitton Osaka will extend the running period of its "Abstrakt" exhibition, showcasing the works of Gerhard Richter. "Abstrakt" was scheduled to close on April 17, but due to popular demand, it will now run until May 15.

Organized as part of the "Hors-les-murs" (Beyond the Walls) program at Espace Louis Vuitton locations worldwide, this exhibition features selected works from the Fondation Louis Vuitton collection. Each Espace in Tokyo, Munich, Venice, Beijing, Seoul, and Osaka aims to realize the Fondation's mission and provide more people with opportunities to experience the works in its collection through international projects.

For Espace Louis Vuitton Osaka, the Fondation Louis Vuitton has specially selected 18 abstract works by Richter from its collection, retracing his creative career spanning more than 30 years. Two of these works, 940-4 Abstraktes Bild (Abstract Painting) and 941-7 Abstraktes Bild (Abstract Painting) (2015), will be shown for the first time.

About the Artist
Gerhard Richter was born in Neustadt, near Dresden, Germany, in 1932 and lived there until 1961. He studied first at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (Kunstakademie Dresden) from 1951 to 1956 and then at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts (Kunstakademie Düsseldorf) from 1961 to 1963. Considered one of the most important living painters, Richter has achieved international renown for his work over the past five decades, influencing generations. His numerous awards include the State Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) in 2000, the Praemium Imperiale (Japan) in 1997, the Golden Lion at the 47th Venice Biennale (Italy) in 1997, the Kaiserring Art Prize of the City of Goslar (Germany) in 1988, and the Oskar Kokoschka Prize (Austria) in 1985. Starting with "Forty Years of Painting" at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA, in 2002, several retrospectives of Richter's work have been held. In 2011-2012, three European museums - the Tate Modern (London, UK), the New National Gallery (Berlin, Germany), and the Musée d'Art Moderne - Centre Pompidou (Paris, France) - presented panoramic exhibitions of Richter's work.
