BRICK & MORTAR, a lifestyle select shop in Nakameguro, Tokyo, will be hosting an order event for original indigo-dyed straw hats at its Nakameguro flagship store on June 25th and 26th. BRICK & MORTAR is resurrecting deadstock "shizore" (hemp), a rare, high-quality natural material that was once unsuitable for distribution due to sun damage during storage, by dyeing it a deep, vibrant Japan blue (Awa indigo) and releasing it as an original straw hat. Using the traditional "Jigoku-date" (hell-building) technique, in which sukumo (sukumo) is fermented with only wood lye, bran, and lime, the indigo color is maximized in the light, supple, and lustrous shizor fabric. Customers can choose from three base styles—solid color, nemaki-shibori (nemaki tie-dye), and murakumo-shibori (murakumo-shibori)—and three styles—soft hat (fedora), bowler hat, and boater hat. Options like silk ribbon and leather ribbon are also available. The delivery time is expected to be around two weeks.
