[LOOK] Stella McCartney presents her Winter 2022 collection at the Centre Pompidou

Mar 8, 2022
On March 7th, Stella McCartney unveiled its Winter 2022 collection.

The Stella McCartney Winter 2022 collection celebrates Frank Stella, an iconic American artist and one of the most influential painters and sculptors of his generation. The collection, titled "Stella and Stella," combines art and fashion in a show set on the top floor of the Centre Pompidou. The collection reflects the Stella woman as both creator and collector, transforming utilitarian classics into effortlessly wearable art. Exploring the breadth of Frank Stella's career, from minimalism to maximalist Abstract Expressionism, Stella McCartney is also inspired by his presence in the New York art scene, where he worked by day and connected with other creatives by night. Animal-free leather and velvet textures are referenced in period interiors, while a color palette that combines masculine boldness with feminine makeup tones is energized with unexpected colors and prints. The sculptural form of the human body is also highlighted through the exposure of bare skin in lingerie looks and ready-to-wear pieces. Frank Stella's art is scattered throughout the collection, sometimes revealingly and sometimes subtly. Stella's iconic tailoring, crafted with traditional Savile Row techniques, features graphic prints inspired by the work of Frank Stella. These prints are also featured on monochrome evening dresses in lustrous Lurex. Slim flannel suits are subtly accented with muted chalk stripes and paired with shape and triathlon bras. The linear structure of Frank Stella's "V Series" is reflected in color-block knitwear made from Traceable fabric and jacquard wool coats inspired by menswear.

Striped fur-free fur coats, oversized tuxedo tailoring, and boxy coats are presented in bold, power-shoulder silhouettes. In contrast to this masculine energy, a flowing stretch viscose dress printed with Frank Stella's "Ahab" motif offers a feminine counterpoint. A high-necked, smooth cerulean-colored silk viscose jersey dress features a structured V that hugs the midriff and is draped with ruching. A sculptural balloon skirt is paired with an underwired bra.

Details evocative of Frank Stella's metallic sculptures are realized in the form of gunmetal chain fringe embroidered on the silk dress. Lace accents on bias-effect silk slip dresses, a figure-hugging lilac Forest Friendly viscose jumpsuit, and soft pink velvet tops and dresses with a twist of shirred detailing add a touch of sensuality. A light chintz dress with shirred sleeves, a red double-breasted satin dress with an asymmetrical bustline, and a long skirt that reveals the knee with every step are sensual yet romantically charged with a daring heart-shaped neckline.

Artist workwear is also elevated with functional details and rich fabrics. These elements are reflected in the collection's velvety flocked denim jackets and cargo pants, as well as skirts and utility pants accented with contrast stitching and recycled polyester clip belts. Work shirts, featuring oversized lapels and large chest pockets, exude refined utilitarianism. Key outerwear looks include shearling coats with fur-free fur collars in soft wool, long pea coats, and men's jackets with compact silhouettes.

A new monogram shoulder bag is crafted from vegan leather made from grape pomace recovered from a winery located close to the Italian workshop where the brand's accessories are handcrafted. A zamak zinc alloy plaque featuring the Stella McCartney Monogram evokes the style of the 20th century. The chenille "Logo" tote and "Flame" puffer bag, crafted from recycled nylon and featuring a tonal chain, are inspired by modernist furniture from the 20th century. A limited-edition shoulder bag crafted from Mylo™, a vegan leather made from mycelium, embodies material innovation.

This season also sees the launch of Stella McCartney's most sustainable sneakers to date, incorporating a variety of reclaimed, recycled, and plant-based materials, including grape leather, an emerging alternative. The Air Slide, featuring a puff sole and the iconic chain in a tone-on-tone color scheme, is crafted from post-industrial waste. Vegan cowboy boots are reinvented as stretch boots in smooth Alter Matte and velvet. Chain earrings in pop colors from the 1980s and limited-edition jewelry inspired by the eccentric work of Frank Stella complete the accessories collection.

This season, sustainable materials are used in ready-to-wear pieces. As always, true to the brand spirit, our products are leather, feather, fur and skin-free, and made entirely from animal hides. They are made with Forest Friendly Viscose Organic Cotton, recycled nylon, recycled polyester, Nativa regenerated wool and certified wool from traceable sources.
