Enjoy Haneda Airport before boarding! Souvenir shops selling everything from craft beer to designer Japanese sweets

Aug 14, 2014

It's pointless to buy souvenirs the day before to take to your hometown or accommodation, making your luggage heavier. That's because Haneda Airport is the perfect place to stock up on souvenirs, with everything from the latest sweets to airport-exclusive items.

First, we recommend "PIER," located on the second floor of the South Wing and North Wing of Terminal 1. This store stocks a variety of Japanese and Western souvenirs, and all of the sweets sold there are popular items.

One item we recommend, regardless of the recipient's age or gender, is the various "Azabu Karinto" sweets with their adorable packaging designs. Karinto, made with carefully selected ingredients, comes in a lineup of around 50 flavors, including matcha and honey, and "PIER" sells 20 carefully selected varieties. We recommend three products sold in Haneda Airport-exclusive packaging.

The "Azabu Karinto" (343 yen) is made with domestically produced brown sugar and finished with black sesame, the "Vegetable Mix Karinto" (343 yen) is kneaded with five kinds of vegetables: sweet potato, spinach, carrot, pumpkin, and onion, and the "Kinpira Gobo Karinto" (305 yen) is a slightly spicy treat that brings out the flavor of burdock root without being too sweet.

If you're looking for a gift for a Japanese sweets lover, we recommend the "HIGASHIYA" three-piece monaka set (1,800 yen). The Tamba bean paste, purple sweet potato bean paste, and black sesame bean paste (600 yen each) are all carefully baked using traditional methods using domestically produced glutinous rice, resulting in a particularly fragrant flavor. A gift that is sure to be highly praised for its good taste. If you're looking for a gift for a family with children, how about the "Drawing Macarons" (5 pieces for 1,200 yen) from "Anniversary." Their adorable design and colorful designs are sure to bring a smile to the recipient's face. If you're looking for a gift other than sweets, we recommend the airport-exclusive "SORAIRUKA Plastic Bottle Cap Opener" (850 yen). Another must-see is the "Wooden Airplane Set ANA" (2,000 yen), a truly airport-themed souvenir. If you're looking for a gift for alcohol-loving family or friends, we recommend "Haneda Sky Ale" (2 bottles with an original insulated bag for 1,426 yen). This local Tokyo craft beer, exclusive to Haneda Airport (only available at Tokyo Shokuhinkan Gate C in Terminal 1 and SMILE TOKYO in Terminal 2), is fruity and satisfying. If you'd like to try it for yourself before giving it as a gift, it's available for purchase at various restaurants throughout the building, so feel free to sample to your heart's content. Even if you end up drinking too much because it's so delicious, you can rest assured that you'll be able to enjoy a good night's sleep once you're on the plane.

If you're looking for a gift for a female friend or a stylish man, head to KINOKUNIYA entree in the Marketplace on the first basement floor of Passenger Terminal 1. Their eco-friendly bags are extremely popular, especially those printed with an airplane logo instead of the original KINOKUNIYA "K" logo, exclusive to Haneda Airport.

Their selection is fun to browse, including a travel shopping bag (2,400 yen) for carrying luggage that won't fit in your trunk and a Cordura lunch bag (1,900 yen) perfect for carrying lunch boxes and drinks. Lightweight and compact, they're a great choice not only as souvenirs but also for yourself.
