Feb 16, 2017

Our Thursday series, featuring must-read books from each branch of the art bookshop NADiff, features photographer Ume Kayo's long-awaited new photo book, "White Dog." This week, we present it at the flagship NADiff A/P/A/R/T store in Ebisu, Tokyo (1-18-4 Ebisu, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, 1F). ■ "White Dog" by Ume Kayo

In 2007, Ume Kayo won the 32nd Kimura Ihei Award for her photo book "Umeme." Ume Kayo has consistently garnered attention, holding exhibitions in Tokyo, Paris, London, and Thailand. Her photographs, capturing the most captivating moments in everyday life, have garnered widespread support. This book features her white dog, Ryo, who has frequently appeared in her previous collections. Ume first encountered Ryo one day when she was 18 and visiting her parents' home. Then, in his later years, Ryo, who had grown old and frail, went off into the mountains one day and never returned. At first, she was afraid of dogs, but in later years, they became like friends to her. Through photographs taken whenever she returned to her parents' home in Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture, this book chronicles her 17 years with Ryo. Ryo peering through the gap in the sliding door, Ryo playing with his nose covered in mud, Ryo turning around with a questioning look in his eyes. His expressive faces will make you chuckle and feel his affection. Those who have lived with dogs will likely find some scenes relatable to their beloved pets.
