Laforet Museum Harajuku will host "Calculated Imagination: Media Art from IAMAS," an exhibition featuring works by graduates of the world-renowned educational and research institution IAMAS, from March 10th to 16th. Laforet Harajuku is exploring new academia-industry collaborations with vocational schools, universities, and research institutes across a variety of fields, with the aim of discovering and nurturing new talent and developing new businesses. As part of this initiative, the museum will host a media art exhibition in collaboration with IAMAS (Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences), a unique educational and research institution in Gifu Prefecture that has produced media artists such as Ryota Kuwakubo, Daito Manabe, Ai Hasegawa, Soichiro Mihara, Hajime Kanno, and Taitoku Yamashiro. The exhibition will feature works by IAMAS graduates, who are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, as well as current IAMAS faculty members, and will feature exhibitions and talk events. Ryota Kuwakubo will exhibit "Landscape and Images," in which a model train illuminates the "scenery," while Soichiro Mihara will exhibit "Bells," which is themed around the sound of a glass bell that rings the moment a radiation sensor built into the work detects radiation. Hajime Kanno will exhibit "Language Becoming a Dead Body," a work in which AI learns the shapes and patterns of characters written by multiple people and then creates a series of meaningless lines that resemble letters.
Related events will also be held during the exhibition. A club event will be held from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on March 10, and gallery talks featuring artists will be held on March 11th and 12th. Live performances featuring artists and musicians will also be held on March 11th from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
