Luxury hotel Rosewood São Paulo opens in the heart of São Paulo, near vibrant Paulista Avenue

Jan 11, 2022
Rosewood São Paulo opened on January 10th of this year, marking Rosewood Hotels & Resorts' entry into South America as a new global icon of the ultra-luxury brand. Located in the heart of São Paulo near vibrant Avenida Paulista, Rosewood São Paulo is an urban oasis nestled within the historic grounds of the Cidade Matarazzo, a beautifully preserved early 20th-century complex that has been lovingly transformed into private residences, luxury retail and entertainment venues. The captivating hotel occupies a historic building and a striking new vertical garden tower, housing stylish mixed-use cultural amenities.

Overseen by entrepreneur Alexandre Allard, acclaimed for his contribution to the revitalization of the House of Balmain, and designed by a leading international team including Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel and visionary creator Philippe Starck, Rosewood São Paulo is redefining the local landscape and setting a new standard for luxury hospitality in São Paulo. Designed by Nouvel and with interiors by Starck, Rosewood São Paulo features 160 guest rooms and 100 Rosewood Suites spread across a new vertical garden tower, completely renovating the former maternity hospital known as the "Condessa Filomena Matarazzo Maternity Hospital." This early 20th-century heritage building holds great symbolic and emotional significance for the community of over 500,000 people born here. Rosewood São Paulo breathes new life into the former maternity hospital, honoring its original identity and maintaining its joyous spirit as a place where life begins. The Rosewood São Paulo site also includes another historic building, the Santa Lucia Basilica, which has been carefully restored to preserve its magnificent 1922 architecture. During the renovation work, richly decorated fragments of the Basilica's original foundations were uncovered and have been meticulously refinished and incorporated into the restored structure. The restoration of Santa Lucia Basilica coincides with its centenary, marking the beginning of a new era in its continued use for weddings and other celebrations of life.

"It was a true honor to be part of bringing such a unique hotel project to life in one of the world's most dynamic cities. The team behind Rosewood São Paulo has spent 10 years working on this project to ensure its honor is upheld, celebrating the city's heritage and breathing new life into the destination, creating a hotel that is a true love letter to the city, its country and its people. We look forward to welcoming visitors from around the world to experience São Paulo's dynamic offering firsthand, providing a starting and ending point for their cultural journey."

Art, Architecture and Design
In line with Rosewood's guiding "Sense of Place®" philosophy, which weaves the unique spirit of a destination into the hotel's identity, Rosewood São Paulo features the Nagakura Collection, a collection of more than 450 works by 57 contemporary Brazilian artists inspired by their experiences in Brazil. Each piece featured is unique, created by an artist who celebrates Brazil's natural beauty, rich history, and diverse culture. Treating the property as a once-in-a-generation art project, the hotel team selected artists representing a wide range of Brazilian artistic practices, from street art to indigenous art, to ensure all aspects of our beautifully diverse nation were represented.

Throughout the property, art spans a variety of mediums, including sculptures, paintings, tiles, drawings, and specially commissioned textiles and rugs, telling the story of all life in Brazil. The art collection also features multimedia installations, including a video display in the lobby depicting scenes from the Brazilian rainforest. The unique collection's completeness is complemented by a master art book available to guests and visitors in guest rooms and public spaces, conveying the profound and nuanced narratives behind each individual project and highlighting how they are woven into the sweeping tapestry of Brazil's creative scene.

Masterpieces from the collection include hand-painted tiles inspired by Brazil's diverse flora and fauna by contemporary Brazilian artist Sandra Cinto, which are spread throughout the rooftop pool and bar area; a vibrant graffiti-style painting of one of the maternity building's corridors by beloved São Paulo local street artist Caligrapixo, known for his work focused on capturing urban life in this dynamic city; and a series of original drawings by emerging young artist Virgilio Neto at the rooftop entrance, depicting the imagined life of Count Matarazzo. Vik Muniz, one of Brazil's most internationally renowned artists, created a new Santa Lucia-inspired stained-glass rose window to replace the original stained-glass discovered during the restoration of the Santa Lucia Basilica. In addition to the striking beauty of the hotel's overall design, there are nuances and delicate details throughout the design and art that tell a local story and celebrate both heritage architecture and the nation of Brazil.

Focus on Sustainability
Rosewood São Paulo is committed to protecting Brazil's natural environment through sustainability as one of its guiding principles for development. Cidade Matarazzo is Brazil's largest upcycling project and the first lifestyle complex where nature and luxury work together. Sustainable features are implemented throughout the property's design, including a biodiversity program for flora and fauna, solar energy, water recycling technology, and a 100% organic spa. Making a positive impact on the local community and the environment is Rosewood São Paulo's value and goal, and the building has been carefully planned to have as small a footprint as possible.

São Paulo's Newest Culinary Destination
As part of the destination's larger F&B renaissance, Rosewood São Paulo will open six new dining establishments in São Paulo's most vibrant neighborhood. Designed for various occasions, the hotel's F&B offerings will showcase remarkable and memorable world-class gastronomic experiences in immersive, distinctive spaces. The elegant Le Jardin, in an intimate setting bathed in natural light and extending from the lobby to a landscaped garden, serves contemporary cuisine 24 hours a day, perfectly suited for casual lunches or ecstatic dinners.

Inspired by the French-Swiss novelist Blaise Cendrars, Blaise will fuse French and Swiss cuisine in a historic obstetrics and gynecology building. The restaurant's intimate design, intended to highlight the novelist's Brazil-obsessed imagination, showcases the work of Brazilian artists, including hand-painted ceramic tiles by Fernando de La Roque. Honoring its location at Matarazzo Maternity Hospital, the hand-painted tiles are designed to resemble traditional Portuguese tiles. Upon closer inspection, a mural depicting a woman giving birth is hidden within the tile composition. Blaze's wooden walls are adorned with glass green stones, created through the precision technique of polishing Brazilian volcanic stone using the same machines used to cut diamonds. Taraz, the restaurant's third restaurant, highlights traditional Brazilian dishes and South American cuisine, featuring original recipes from the Amazon rainforest. The sharing-style menu, designed by renowned chef Felipe Bronze, showcases his charcoal-grilled cooking skills. The restaurant, located in front of the property's century-old olive grove, has been decorated in a more traditional, rustic style by local artists and designers and pays tribute through its name to Count Matarazzo, a revered Brazilian historical figure.

Other dining options include Rabo di Galo, a jazz bar offering bespoke drinks and classic Brazilian bar snacks accompanied by live music. The overall bar design is inspired by classic 1930s jazz clubs, featuring leather furniture, dark wood, and intimate, ambient lighting. Artist Rodrigo de Azevedo Saad spent 68 hours hand-painting the ceiling of Rabo di Gallo, creating a magical, primal universe of repeating patterns, a kind of schizophrenic art. Inspired by the natural beauty of the crystal-clear pools in the Brazilian municipality of Bonito, Emerald Garden Pool & Bar is nestled amidst beautiful tropical greenery, perfect for family gatherings. The pool's interior is made of small tile pieces featuring 40 different shades of green and blue, mimicking the emerald hues of Bonito's natural pools, and featuring unique gradients influenced by the colors of the Amazon. The restaurant's coasters and menus feature imaginary animal drawings by renowned Brazilian artist and illustrator Walmor Correa. The pool area also features the Belavista Rooftop Pool & Bar, an adults-only space offering panoramic city views. All timber for the entire roof and pool area was supplied by Tora Brazil and is certified by Brazil's Forest Stewardship Council as part of the property's commitment to sustainable development.
