Max Mara has been featured at the New Year's Concert "La Fenice in Venezia," which will be held in Italy on January 1, 2022. For the first time, Max Mara has designed costumes for the dancers of the "Fondazione Nazionale della Danza / Aterballetto," reinterpreting iconic models created specifically for the performance.

The New Year's Concert in Venice, which was first held in 2004, quickly gained worldwide popularity. Live music by the La Fenice Orchestra and Chorus, as well as guest singers, alternates with pre-recorded dance performances at key locations around the city. Max Mara's Creative Director, Ian Griffiths, partnered with Diego Tortelli, choreographer of Italy's only 100% government-funded artistic production, Fondazione Nazionale della Danza / Aterballetto, to promote Italian dance globally through collaborations with theatre, art and fashion. The resulting Max Mara costumes, created through collaboration between the two parties, feature vibrant colours of yellow, red, electric blue and green. These pure and special colours create the theatrical tension and evoke the emotions associated with the Cini Foundation and Palazzo Grassi, the places where ballet comes to life.

"Diego and I began working on the project even before the choreography was finalized. This resulted in a very exciting exercise in figuring out movement in relation to the physical properties of the costumes. The costumes, particularly the coats, restrict movement and thus create the dance, whereas in general it's the other way around. My inspiration was to use street-style clothing in blocks of primary colour, contrasting it with the historic location - an attempt to make the ordinary extraordinary," says Ian Griffiths.

The concept of universal wear, where women's and men's wardrobes meet, thus began with the pairing of tank tops with shorts or tailored trousers. Capes, waistcoats, jackets, coats and wrap coats, including the world-famous teddy bear style, were reinterpreted and transformed into dance tools, often incorporating long belts. The male dancers donned Max Mara women's blazers, while the female dancers ditched their classic tutus for organza pants and pointe shoes... showcasing their beautiful physiques and graceful movements in a sophisticated crossover of styles.

The 2022 New Year's Concert in Venice is a co-production with Italian National Television and will be broadcast on Rai 1 channel from 12:25 pm. Maestro Fabio Luisi will perform, with a stellar cast including Pretty Yende (soprano), Brian Ziegge (tenor), and Alfonso Caiani (chorus master).
