Dec 27, 2013

Actress and singer Marlene Dietrich was born in Germany on December 27, 1901. She enrolled in the Weimar Conservatory to become a violinist, but gave up on her musical dream after injuring her wrist. She then enrolled in drama school and made her film debut in "Napoleon's Brother" in 1922. In 1930, her talent was recognized by film director Josef von Sternberg, who cast her in "The Blue Angel." She became popular for her decadent beauty, sexy singing voice, and beautiful legs. That same year, she moved to the United States and made her Hollywood debut in "Morocco." She caused a sensation by dressing in men's clothing, including a top hat and tailcoat, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. She ended her relationship with director Sternberg, both professional and personal, in 1935. Later, Adolf Hitler, the German leader at the time, took a liking to Marlene, and asked her to return to Germany, but she declined and instead obtained American citizenship. During World War II, she toured Europe to entertain American soldiers. She sang the popular song "Lili Marleen," which expressed a soldier's feelings for his lover, encouraging them.

She toured the world as a singer from the 1950s until retiring in 1975. She died in May 1992 from liver and kidney failure. After her death, a square in central Berlin was named "Marlene Dietrich Platz." The "Cartier, Style and History" exhibition currently on display at the Grand Palais in Paris features items related to world celebrities, including Marlene, Elizabeth Taylor, and the Duchess of Windsor.
