Special screening: "Three Photographers and One Artist," four documentaries including Vivian Maier and Rei Naito

Jan 14, 2016

For two weeks from January 16th to February 12th, Yokohama Cinemarin will host a special photography feature, "Living in the Times: Three Photographers and One Artist," focusing on recently released documentaries about photographers or artists.

In recent years, documentaries about photographers have been released one after another. This event will screen four documentaries that focus on three photographers and one artist living in different times and places. The film explores the essence of art through the photographers, exploring how each artist interacts with society and how they have lived their lives.

Of the four films being screened, "Sebastião Salgado: A Love Letter to the Earth," which won the Un Certain Regard Special Award at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, is a documentary about Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. Sebastião Salgado, who traveled to 120 countries in search of the most beautiful places on earth, including the Galapagos, Alaska, and the Sahara, and whose work explores themes of human death, destruction, and decay, is depicted from the perspectives of his son, Giuliano, and Wim Wenders, a master of German cinema.

"Searching for Vivian Maier" focuses on the story of Vivian Maier, the former nanny who, despite being a nanny, captured over 150,000 images that captivated the world. The film delves into the mysteries of Vivian Maier, including why she was so talented that her posthumous photo book became the number one seller in the United States, yet never published a single photo during her lifetime, and how a woman who worked as a nanny could take such excellent photographs.

The other four films being screened are "Tracing the Future: Photographer Hatakeyama Naoya," which follows Hatakeyama Naoya, known for his meticulous portrayals of the relationship between nature and humans, including works capturing limestone mines, coal mines, and rivers flowing through the gaps between densely packed buildings, and "Fragile Room: Naito Rei and the Lights," which depicts the life of artist Naito Rei using a new visual expression that is somewhere between documentary and fiction.

Furthermore, after the screening of "Tracing the Future: Photographer Hatakeyama Naoya" on January 30th, director Hatakeyama Yohei will give a speech on stage, and after the screening of "Fragile Room: Naito Rei and the Lights" on the same day, director Nakamura Yuko will give a speech on stage.
