The 40th "Mode in France" exhibition, held at the Westin Hotel Tokyo in Ebisu, Tokyo, for the 2016-17 Autumn/Winter season, opened on January 13 and continues through today, January 15. The event, which is held in Japan ahead of other events like Who's Next and Tranoi in Paris, showcases the latest collections of women's ready-to-wear, leather, fur, and accessories. More than 50 brands exhibited this year. While the number of visitors on the first day was lower than usual, the number of companies increased. First-time exhibitors received orders from the first day, and regular brands also received large orders, resulting in lively business negotiations. Speaking at a press conference on the second day, Patricia Brafman, international director of the French Women's Ready-to-Wear Federation, emphasized, "Japanese buyers are cautious, so it's very rare for a brand exhibiting for the first time to receive an order. With more companies and buyers refraining from business trips to Paris, we hope to see an increase in orders in Tokyo." Additionally, the brand is strengthening its efforts to open an office in Shenzhen, China, hold a Mode in France Seoul exhibition, and develop new markets such as Algeria, Iran, and South Africa. Regarding the next Mode in France event in Japan, which will be moved to an underground banquet hall, the brand also plans to "focus on attracting young creators, including creating a 9-square-meter booth. It aims to foster synergies with leading companies, and will also change its logo and visuals to create surprising ideas." Stella Pardo, a brand also available at Mitsukoshi Isetan and Baycrew's, is exhibiting for the first time. Their hand-knitted baby alpaca knitwear, designed in Paris and produced in Peru, has been well-received, with two orders received. Along with their women's collection, they are also showcasing a baby's collection made with high-quality organic cotton. Laulhere, the manufacturer of berets for the French military and a French company designated as an intangible cultural heritage, will also be exhibiting for the first time. "Considering the impact of the terrorist attacks, this was our first time exhibiting. We've already received orders from 10 companies, which is great. We'd like to continue participating in the future," said the brand. Bag maker Sabatier 1947 showcased bags whose designs change depending on the zipper. Despite being their first exhibit, they've already received four orders from retailers and wholesalers. Also exhibiting at the event is Evalinka, a brand based in Marseille, southern France, who is exhibiting for the third time. Their products are known for their colorful, large prints, graphic knitwear, and blends of different materials. "The response has been better than last time. We're looking forward to it," said Somewhere, which is participating for the second time in a year. Their products are centered around chic, simple knitwear and dresses with original prints. "Orders are tough, but we've made a lot of contacts. We'd like to find a partner in Japan that will help us express our brand concept."
