COMME des GARÇONS used the British outsider art magazine RAW VISION for its 2014 direct mail (DM). While a specific artist has been featured in the DM each year, this year marks the first time that a print selection has been selected. Rei Kawakubo freely designed the DM using the magazine's layout. The center double-page spread features a dynamic outsider art piece as a backdrop, with the text, "The Spring-Summer 2014 collections have arrived. Please come and see us." Outsider art has been a favorite of Kawakubo's in recent years, appearing in the textiles for the COMME des GARÇONS 2013-14 Autumn/Winter collection and the interior design of Dover Street Market New York, which opened in December. Items and special installations related to the DM have been announced every year, and this year's release is sure to be no exception.
The purpose of this direct mail is to deliver information about the start of a season, shop openings, events, and more to customers. The number of issues to be published this year has yet to be decided. To date, artists who have featured in the magazine include contemporary artist Ai Weiwei, photographer Rene Burri, and manga artist Otomo Katsuhiro.
RAW VISION is an art magazine published in 1989. It was one of the first to focus on and introduce "outsider art," art created by people with disabilities. In 2007, it was described as "the Rolling Stone of outsider art."
