Damien Hirst publishes children's art book "ABC"

Oct 9, 2013

Contemporary artist Damien Hirst, whose works have shocked the art world with works such as giant sharks and cow slices preserved in formalin, has just published his first children's art book, "ABC." Each word, from "A" to "Z," is selected by Damien himself, and each one features one of his artworks related to that word. For example, the page for "J" is titled "Jaws," and features one of Hirst's signature works, a shark preserved in formalin. In response to a question about whether contemporary art is a bit difficult for children to understand, a public relations representative said, "Children, who have fewer preconceived notions about words and things, tend to perceive meanings more directly and have a wide variety of impressions. The book is designed so that parents can discuss any impressions or questions that arise from viewing his work." This book features a concise and easy-to-understand design, and was personally created with careful attention to detail, from the binding to the font design.

The retail price in the UK is 15 GBP (approximately 2,300 JPY), and it will be sold widely through art book dealers around the world as well as through the official online shop of publisher Other Criteria.

A launch party was held on October 1st at Other Criteria, a publishing house and art gallery in Marylebone, London, inviting many art fans and gallery clients. The invitation read, "Bring your kids!" and many guests brought their families with them, enjoying the drinks and attractions provided. At the end of the party, a sale was held for the book, which was released that day, and parents were seen giving copies to their children as gifts. The children opened the pages on the spot, their eyes wide open, and they shared their impressions with smiles on their faces.
