TeamLab's 3D tree appears at Canal City Hakata. Ornaments can be controlled with your smartphone.

Oct 31, 2013

The "Wishing Christmas Tree," a three-dimensional illuminated Christmas tree by the technology group teamLab, will be on display at Canal City Hakata (1-12 Sumiyoshi, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture) from November 16th to December 25th in Fukuoka. Approximately 50,000 full-color LED chips are placed throughout the 6-meter-diameter, 9-meter-tall cylinder, rather than just on its surface. The tree utilizes teamLab's "Interactive 4D Vision," a 3D imaging system that can be controlled in real time via smartphone. Visitors can access the tree from their smartphone browser, choose their favorite ornaments, and swipe toward the "Wishing Christmas Tree" to decorate it. Once the tree is filled to capacity, Santa Claus will appear and collect the ornaments, carrying them into the sky. Using the touchscreen at the venue, visitors can enjoy special effects such as light ribbons, twinkling stars, and wind-blown tree swaying. Starting at 7pm on the first day, the 16th, a lighting ceremony will be held at the Sun Plaza Stage on the first basement floor of Canal City using the "Tsunagari Candle" app, which allows you to enjoy a candle relay developed by teamLab. Singer-songwriter Chara is also scheduled to make an appearance.
