Starting April 27th, the interactive animation "The World is So Gentle and Beautiful," by calligrapher Sisyu and teamLab, will be permanently installed on the digital signage in the departure lobby on the fourth floor of the South Wing at Narita Airport's Terminal 1.
The animation uses a concave, curved OLED panoramic screen, the largest of the 100 digital signage units installed at Narita Airport, known as "Sky Gate Vision." It will be shown for 30 minutes every hour from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
The work uses sensors installed at the top of the digital signage screen to detect human movement, causing Sisyu's calligraphy (kanji) to appear to float. When visitors approach the floating calligraphy (kanji), the shape of the kanji changes to reflect its meaning, and it is then materialized into its original form.
This experiential digital art piece was first unveiled by Sisyu and teamLab in 2011. It won the Architecture, Arts and Culture Award at the international ReVolution competition held at Laval Virtual, a French virtual reality exhibition. It has also been shown in Singapore, Switzerland, Sweden and other countries, receiving high praise overseas.
