"DAVID LYNCH meets HOSOO," a collaborative exhibition between Hosoo, a long-established Nishijin weaver founded in 1688, and cult film director David Lynch, will be held at EYE OF GYRE in Omotesando, Tokyo, from October 7th to November 13th. Nishijin weaving is considered the world's most complex textile, and Hosoo's Nishijin weaving features incredibly multi-layered weaving, continuing to evolve. David Lynch is an internationally acclaimed film director, having received the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival, and is also active as a painter. This collaborative exhibition combines Japan's ever-evolving traditions with cutting-edge creativity, depicting the human psyche through textiles. The project was inspired by David Lynch's spiral painting "SPIRAL." Lynch has said of this work, "A spiral is a circle that rises and falls repeatedly. For me, this spiral is a circle that represents evolution." Hosoo has analyzed the imagery and worldview of Lynch's paintings using his unique Nishijin weaving techniques, and by constructing a spatial installation, has evolved it into a three-dimensional "SPIRAL that fuses layered worlds."
